General Rule

Unlike plant names, animal names are not capitalized in English.

Exceptions

Binomial Scientific Names

In scientific contexts, the genus name (first part) of an animal's binomial scientific name is capitalized, while the species name (second part) is lowercase: Felis catus (domestic cat).

Proper Names

If an animal's name is a proper name (such as a breed or person's pet), it should be capitalized: English Setter, Patches.

In certain formal or technical contexts, common animal names may be capitalized for emphasis or clarity:
